I’ve been fortunate to work with some inspiring Board Chairs and leaders in my career, and one was the late, great, Ron Walker.
When faced with a tough situation or negotiation, he was often heard to say ‘don’t blink’. And he absolutely led by example in that respect.
Backing ourselves and keeping a strong game face, can be tough, especially when all eyes are on us, and we’re leading the way on what is, at best, a partially paved road. It’s ok to feel worried or nervous when everyone’s looking to you for direction- that’s normal.
As leaders, though, we need to demonstrate courage and self belief, and a willingness to keep leading and moving, sothat others can follow, and take some courage and confidence from us.
And to quote William James again: ” emergencies and crises show us how much greater our vital resources are than we had supposed.”
You’ve got this. Just believe it.
